Q:  Is Invisalign the right choice for me?

A:  Invisalign has worked on a few million people, so chances are that Invisalign will work for you.  Patients with “crooked teeth,” “crowded teeth” or “narrow smiles” can often obtain the results they’ve dreamed of in 8 to 15 months.  Since aligners are clear, being in treatment doesn’t really seem like a big deal, according to most patients.

Q:  I’ve been told by an orthodontist and/or dentist that I need metal braces.  Why can’t I have Invisalign?

A:  In some instances, metal braces will give the dentist or orthodontist more control over more advanced tooth movements.  Metal braces might even shorten the treatment time, to an extent.  You are always welcome to come for a 15 minute consultation or second opinion.  Another approach to your interest in having straight teeth would be to ask Dr. Kivel or the others that you have seen if a more limited treatment would produce a nice cosmetic result while keeping a healthy and stable bite.  This “85% of the way to awesome” approach can be a great way to have a beautiful smile at an affordable price while using Invisalign for its clear, non-metal appearance.

Q:  So what’s the difference between Invisalign and metal braces?

A:  Besides being clear and removable for excellent hygiene, frankly, the biggest variable with Invisalign treatment is that, for a successful and on-time result, patients must be diligent about wearing their aligners all day and night except when eating.

Q:  Do I need to wear retainers after treatment?  If so, for how long?

A:  Yes!  Forever (or as long as you want straight teeth)!  We certainly don’t want to deter you from getting Invisalign … but we also want you to be happy.  So, yes, you will need to wear retainers (we recommend Vivera retainers from Invisalign – look and feel like Invisalign aligners only thicker).  Please only proceed with Invisalign or any other orthodontic treatment if you are prepared to wear retainers. Many patients report that they like sleeping with their retainers in as it helps alleviate pressure from clenching and grinding (similar to a night guard).

Q:  Anything else about Invisalign that I should know?

A:  Thanks for asking.  We've attached a “Things to Know” consent form here as we feel it is so important for patients to understand the ins-and-outs of Invisalign before, during and after treatment.  Oh yeah, and patients tell us that they lose on average about 7 pounds while in treatment due to reduced snacking aka the "Invisalign diet".  Pretty funny!

Q:  I’ve heard that Dr. Kivel and his wife have had Invisalign.  Is that true?

A:  Yes, and you should have seen Dr. Kivel installing and removing his own composite attachments!
